8 Techniques To Affect The Subconscious Mind

Your subconscious mind is what puts you on autopilot. While it’s true that you first have to consciously pay attention to what you are doing, or you have to consciously take in a new concept or idea, your subconscious ultimately decides what you do and how you do it and, just like habits, it plays a huge part in how your day is going to go.

As you move towards building habits and beliefs that you want in your life, it helps to have your subconscious mind on board to adopting them. If it can store the data you need, then soon the habits and beliefs that you want to master will become an automatic part of your day and a part of who you are and what you do.

So, how can you get the habits and beliefs you want permanently into your subconscious mind? Following are 8 different techniques that you can use to affect the subconscious mind in a powerful way.

1. Paying Attention To Your Thoughts

This sounds easy, but it can be easier said than done. What you think about most will end up influencing your subconscious mind and your ability to develop the habits and beliefs you want. For instance, if you constantly think, “I’m not deserving of this new habit,” then you are going to consciously resist adopting the new habit into your life, which means your subconscious will resist adopting it into its life.

Think about driving a car. If you are constantly on edge and scared that you are going to crash, then you are never going to develop the automatic way of driving that most of us have. You will resist adopting it into your subconscious because consciously you are focused on all the negatives and fear. If you let them go, then you will find yourself quickly becoming comfortable with your new skill and doing it automatically as you listen to music or talk to other people in the car.

2. Prayer

A prayer is expressing a hope or wish that you have, and when you say a prayer, you feel a sense of faith that your hope or wish is coming. The beauty of prayer is that it is something you can use anywhere. It doesn’t need to be said out loud. It doesn’t need to be done kneeling with your hands together. It is a simple act of expressing what you want and asking for it.

Why does prayer help affect the subconscious mind? First, it repeats what you want to adopt into your conscious mind, which helps the subconscious mind to recognize it as important. And, second, It gives you faith that what you are praying for is coming, and that faith helps solidify what you want in your subconscious mind.

Joseph Murphy says that if you pray with faith, you already possess what you pray for you because you are practicing the law of inverse transformation. He says that if a known fact can change your psychological state, then your psychological state can produce a known fact. In other words, if you believe it enough, you can make it a fact to your subconscious mind.

3. Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP)

NLP communicates directly with your subconscious mind. It helps you adopt new ways of thinking and doing easily, and you can use it to create the life you want. This can’t be explained in just a simple point because there are many different NLP techniques, including anchoring, pattern interruption, swish pattern, and framing. All of them require some knowledge before you delve into them for yourself.

For example, let’s take the swish pattern. It involves 13 steps and it is used to make permanent changes in habits and the way you act. Therefore, if you automatically eat when you see your favorite show, and you want to develop the habit of only eating when you are hungry, this will be something to try.

While there are plenty of places you can learn about NLP, you may want to get a book such as Neuro-linguistic Programming for Dummies. Having it on hand will help you understand the NLP techniques and how to use them.

4. Being Consistent And Repetitive

The more you do something or say something, the more it will adopt into your subconscious mind and accept it. That’s why consistency is so important when it comes to affecting the subconscious.

Repetitive thoughts are very powerful and being consistent is the best way to draw in those repetitive thoughts. When we hear the same thing over and over again, those repeated experiences become part of who we are. For example, my friend consistently heard that she had a big butt from her mom, and guess what? Her subconscious mind soaked in that information and she still believes it to this day. The best way to be consistent and repetitive, is to schedule it into your routine.

For instance, program an alert to go off every few hours and remind you of what you want to think, do, or feel. We are all pretty good at hearing our phones, so you will check it and see the message and consistently think about it throughout your day.

I personally have a water reminder on my phone. It’s an app called Water Your Body. Every hour it makes a noise that sounds like someone is filling up a glass of water, and it reminds me to drink another glass of water. I have found that I now automatically reach for my water bottle once per hour. The constant reminder made it a habit in my life, and it was so easy to do. All I had to do was drink when I heard the water sound.

You can use other things like sticky notes, a goal tracking software that has daily updates on what you want to do, join a challenge that requires you to participate, or just get someone else to remind you of what you need to do. The more you attack your conscious mind with repetitive thoughts, the easier it will be to get your subconscious mind on board.

5. Hypnosis

If you have something in your life that you want your subconscious mind to easily take on, then hypnosis is perfect for you! I know many people are scared of it, but the truth is hypnosis is something that can really get into your subconscious mind and help you get the results you want to get.

I have had hypnosis completely change my subconscious beliefs within a day. I was stuck in a very negative place, where I was automatically focusing on the bad, and listening to a hypnosis MP3, just once, helped me shift the way I viewed the problem.

When you listen to a hypnosis MP3, you first have to become relaxed. You are taken into a deep relaxation state as you focus on a voice and image in your mind. This helps you quiet down your conscious mind and open up your subconscious mind. In other words, it makes your subconscious mind more accessible, and the words and suggestions you hear has an easier time soaking in.

You will find that hypnosis MP3s are usually about 30 minutes long, and the first 15 minutes are spent getting you into a relaxed state. Therefore, don’t lay down to do a hypnosis session. The chances of you falling asleep are very high, and even though your subconscious mind may still hear the messages that are being said, you won’t be able to consciously remember them, which is important. Why? If you have someone on the hypnosis who knows NLP, you will be introduced to a technique that you can use in your everyday life, and you will want to remember what that technique is.

I highly recommend finding a hypnosis MP3 that is done by an NLP master practitioner. If you don’t have the time or desire to learn about NLP, this will help you gain the benefits of NLP without actually having to understand what is happening. Hypnosis Live uses NLP practitioners in their hypnosis sessions, so check them out.

6. Subliminal Messages

Don’t believe that these work? Have you ever been doing something and suddenly gotten a song stuck in your head? Where did that song come from? The chances are good it was playing somewhere in the background – somewhere other than where your conscious mind was focused, but your subconscious mind heard it and when your focus lifted from what you were doing, you suddenly found it playing over and over in your head.

Your subconscious mind is always listening and looking for the background words, images, or sounds that may interest you. If you want to change your habits, and you have been consciously thinking about changing your habits, then your subconscious mind is going to pay attention for any words, images, or sounds that could help you do so.

One of the most talked about techniques for affecting your subconscious mind is positive affirmations. I was going to put them in a separate point, but the truth is that you can use subliminal messages to your advantage and create positive affirmations that you want to remember, but don’t have the time to repeat over and over against to yourself.

You don’t require much to do this, other than a headset or a computer. It all depends on where you spend most of your time.

If you are not in front of your computer a lot, then subliminal messages on MP3 will work well for you. They are recorded behind music, sounds, or noise. Your conscious mind hears the music, sounds, or noise, while your subconscious mind tunes into the little messages that are being said. You can use subliminal messages for any area of your life. All you have to do is choose what you want your subconscious mind to believe and then hide those messages behind some sort of sound. Subliminal Guru offers premade subliminal messages as well as gives you the ability to create customized subliminal messages.

If you are in front of your computer, then you can get little subliminal messages to flash on your computer and help reprogram your subconscious mind without having to do anything but what you were going to do. The best software I’ve seen for this is Subliminal 360. That software also creates MP3s for you, so it kind of gives you double the benefit for your money.

7. Meditation

Meditation helps you turn off your conscious mind. You stop thinking about what is going on around you. You become less aware of your surroundings and more aware of your breath, image, or mantra you are focused on. During meditation you can focus on what you want and let your subconscious mind play around with that idea, image, or mantra.

Another benefit of meditation is that it helps you quiet your mind more in everyday life. You will notice that the more you meditate, the more you will be able to control your thoughts and not go off on tangents. This will help you stay focused on what you really want and keep your thoughts in line with the new habits and beliefs you want to incorporate into your subconscious mind.

If you find it too hard to meditate by yourself, then get a guided meditation. If you have a lot of frantic thoughts in your mind, a voice that takes you on a journey into stillness and quiet can really help you stay focused.

8. Visualization

This is a fun one that everyone can use in their spare time. Simply visualizing what you want to happen in your life can help your subconscious mind to feel as if it is already happening. The subconscious mind does not distinguish between true or false, research has shown us this, so if you are visualizing something strong enough, it will feel as if you are already doing it and store it as something that is a part of your life. It will reshape your reality.

Therefore, make positive visualization a permanent part of your life. In the morning, visualize your day and how you want it to go, including all the habits and beliefs you want to maintain through it. Or, visualize a certain experience coming up going well. And visualize yourself succeeding, having fun, and achieving the things you want to achieve in life.
