I am thankful for so many things in my life. If you are looking back on the year and having a hard time figuring out what to be thankful for, then go through these 25 things and see if anything resonates with you. There are often those little things that we are really thankful for but minimize as we focus on the bad things throughout the year. But, that doesn’t mean they disappear! If you can find the things that really made you feel grateful, then you can find a way to appreciate the year that has passed.
We take it for granted, but our freedom is something that I am thankful for every day. I can do what I want with my day and not worry about the consequences. I have the ability to go for a walk when I want, take a shower when I want, sleep when I want, or visit a loved one when I want. I can do what I want, when I want, and I am beyond thankful for that!
2. My Parents
No matter how frustrating they can be, they gave me life. Without them, I would not be here, so as I look at my life in the past year, I am grateful for my parents giving me the opportunity to live it.
3. Free Time
I am thankful for free time to relax and zone out. I appreciate the time I have to not focus on work, self-growth, or other things, and I value it just as much as I do the time to make the most out of my life. There is just something awesome about having the luxury to stare at a wall if you want.
A world without animals would be a world not worth living in. I love watching animals and being around them. I love learning from their example of love and honesty. I love their cuddles and sincere interest in my life. I am thankful for every single animal that walks the Earth and makes us better in some way.
5. My Mistakes
Every mistake I made this year made me smarter and more capable. And every mistake I made taught me something about myself or life. Therefore, I am thankful for every single mistake that I made, even if it felt dreadful at the time.
6. The Internet
The education and insight I get from the Internet on a daily basis makes me thankful. I remember when information was not so easily accessed, and even though the Internet can be full of hate and ugliness, it is also full of love, connection, and knowledge. I am so grateful to be able to have access to it and connect with the world in a second at any time I want.
Sure, I could die today from some random thing, but for the most part, I’m pretty safe. I value the fact that my home protects me. I value the fact that bombs are not dropping above my house. I value the fact that there is a good chance I will go out for a walk and come back alive. I’ve had that all year long, so I am thankful.
8. Meteor Showers
I have always loved watching the sky at night, but this year in particular I enjoyed getting out for the meteor showers. They reminded me that we are not as big as we think we are. They are beautiful. And they got me out of bed at a time that I would normally be sleeping, which was a great way to change things up and feel like I was doing something unique. The fact that we can see them and not die from these hurling bits of meteors blows my mind, and I am thankful for it.
Clothes in general are something to be thankful for. They can keep you warm, even when the temperature is cold enough to freeze water in less than a minute. They can keep you cool when it’s hot outside. They can change your shape, look, and energy. Clothes have a lot of power to affect our lives, and I am thankful for all the clothes that I wore throughout the year.
10. Cell Phones
I used to hate cell phones, but now I’m thankful for them. I didn’t like them because I found that people were always on them, even when you were trying to visit, and I still feel that way. However, cell phones give us the power to access anything and anyone we want at any time. That’s pretty amazing if you think about it. They can literally make the difference between life and death, so I am grateful that they are around.
Nature keeps us alive, so it is something that I am totally thankful for. The trees give us oxygen. The rivers, lakes, and oceans give us water. The beauty of it fills our souls and makes us happy. The sound of it relaxes us. There is so much to be thankful for about nature. I am grateful for every day I got to experience it.
12. My Mind
I have a friend who has a brother that has an illness where he can’t comprehend things or speak. He has been living physically for over 45 years, but mentally he hasn’t had the luxury that many of us do to think, problem solve, learn, and comprehend. I am so thankful for the ability to do all those things. I never take that for granted because I know how quickly it can go away. Therefore, I’m grateful for everything my mind did for me over the year.
13. My Senses
I have all my senses, and I am thankful for that. I realize that sight and hearing can easily go. I realize that many people do not have the ability to hear or see. While I don’t think life would stop without all my senses, I am grateful that I can hear my loved one’s voices or see their expressions when they are happy. I am thankful that I can hear the birds and see the sky. I am thankful that I can feel the soft fur of a dog that I pet or the warmth of a fireplace. I am thankful that I can smell bread and coffee and all those other wonderful smells that come throughout my day. I am thankful for all the new tastes I had this year when I made new recipes. In the past year, I have seen, heard, smelled, tasted, and felt a lot, so I am thankful.
14. My Happiness
A lot of people are not happy. I realize this. I am thankful for the fact that I recognize happiness and have the ability to laugh, feel good, and celebrate things. I love to be around family and feel the joy that comes from feeling safe and secure. I even love the happiness I feel after a really good meal. I appreciate every bit of happiness I had in the past year, big and small, and when I stop to think about it, there was a lot of it!
15. Negative People
I learned a lot from negative people this year, so I am thankful for every single negative person that came into my life. Whether they tried to ruin my day or just made my life harder than it had to be, I appreciate the fact that I was able to recognize their negativity and how I reacted to it, and then apply the lesson to my life in order to be happier in my life. Sometimes the lesson was to avoid certain people, but for the most part the lessons taught me how to stop dwelling in my negative reaction to negative people, which is a blessing that I hope all of you can have in your life. It’s so much better to feel good than to feel bad after a negative interaction.
16. The Sun
When a loved one was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis this past year, I realized how important the sun is. Obviously I am thankful for the sun because it provides light and warmth, but it also helps the body make vitamin D, which is essential to every aspect of your health, and can even help prevent and treat autoimmune disease, such as MS. It’s cheap, easy, and accessible to everyone.
Along with the sun, we have access to a multitude of vitamins. While you can get your vitamins through the food you eat, I have learned in the past year that some people need to take vitamins because of deficiencies caused by illness or stress. What a blessing it is that we can do that. We can literally hack our body and give it what it needs to thrive and survive.
18. Getting Things Done
This year was a year for getting things done. I came to realize how good it feels to go to bed at night knowing you have accomplished everything you want to accomplish for the day. This intense realization has helped me to work more on beating procrastination and accomplishing goals, which has made my life even more awesome than it was. So, I am thankful for the fact that I was able to get things that matter done this year and really experience the satisfaction that come from doing so.
19. Being Unique
This was another year where I was able to be more of myself and less like the crowd. I love the fact that I am learning to embrace who I am and using my uniqueness to make a difference in the world. There is nothing better than knowing who you are and not pretending to be someone who you are not.
I am thankful for everything electricity does for me. I would say about 95% of my day is possible because of electricity – if not more. I am so thankful that I can plug things in and use them to benefit my mind, my body, and my spirituality.
21. My Emotions
Every emotion I have had throughout the year has helped me understand myself better. Emotions like anger and happiness have helped me understand what I like and don’t like. Emotions like fear have helped me understand when I am putting up resistance to something that could benefit me. Emotions like sadness have helped me become more motivated to have a life that I want. Emotions are a great gift we all have, and I am thankful for them every single day.
Blogs provide us with information that can be hard to access otherwise. They give us insights and solutions that we can apply to our life quickly. I especially love food blogs. Recipes used to come from a recipe book, which meant you either had to buy or borrow to create something new. But now we have access to recipes for any kind of diet or preference you have simply by a simple Google search. I’m blown away at all the new recipes I’ve discovered over the year on blogs, and they were all for free! I am definitely thankful for that!
Speaking of food blogs, I am thankful for the ability to make food so easily. I have access to fresh and frozen food all the time. I have the ability to buy it and create new tastes each day. I have the ability to donate it and give other people the food they need to thrive. We often take food for granted, but it keeps us alive, so it is something to be thankful for at every bite.
24. My Dreams
I keep a dream journal and can see how important my dreams are in my life. I am grateful that during the night, my mind works to solve problems, give me insights, and help me relieve stress. I am thankful for all the times that I was able to fly and do amazing things in my dreams. This year I was even able to lucid dream more and connect with passed loves one simply by recognizing that it was a dream and taking control over what I wanted (or who I wanted) to see. Dreams are an amazing tool at everyone’s disposal, and I am thankful for the ability to recognize that and use them to my advantage.
25. The Opportunities I Had
This past year a lot of things were made possible for me. I am thankful for the fact that I had the opportunities that I did and that I was able to recognize them and take advantage of them when they came around. I credit that to becoming more aware about who I am and what I want, and I look forward to the opportunities coming up!
