11 Tips On Overcoming Adversity Successfully

Overcoming adversity is imperative. In fact, you can’t have the happiness and success you want unless you have adversity in your life and overcome it. It is essential for progressing into who you want to be. It shows you what you are made of. It teaches you more about yourself, how to approach what you want, and how to maintain the success that you have. Without it, you wouldn’t know how far you could go or how capable you are because you wouldn’t have anything to push you or compare to.

The truth is that life is full of adversity. Some things are small, some things are big, but all of them need to be overcome. The sooner we all understand that, the less we will all struggle with the ‘why me’ question.

Adversity happens to everyone, but not everyone deals with it in the same way. The people who can overcome it are the people who are happy and successful in life. The people who struggle with it are the people who feel like they can’t wait to get this hard life over with. Which side would you rather be on? If you want to live a fulfilling life, I hope you choose to tackle it head on! Following are tips on overcoming adversity that you can use to create the life you want.

1. Accept That It’s Happening

First, don’t try to deny that it is happening. If you don’t accept that it is happening, then you won’t see what needs to be done to overcome it. I realize this can be hard. We want to tell ourselves that nothing is wrong or needs to be fixed. We want to tell ourselves that we can close our eyes, open them back up, and everything will be alright. But, it doesn’t work that way. If something is happening, then it is happening, and you need to accept it for what it is, and accept that you need to do something to overcome it.

2. Accept That You CAN Do Something About It

The second step to overcoming adversity is to accept that you are capable of overcoming it. If you strongly believe that it is going to beat you down, then it will. You won’t bother doing anything to overcome it. Instead, you will let it takes its beating on you and wait for it to stop, which it will in some way, but you won’t have the outcome you want.

The only way to overcome adversity and come out stronger is to accept that you have the power to do something about it. Other people have been where you are and overcame it. Other people have found a way out or over or through. If they can do it, so can you!

3. Pound Your Chest (Or Something Similar)

No, really, do it! There are many natural things we do when we feel like we are coming out on top. Pumping the fist, yelling out something, or throwing our arms up in the air are all signs to ourselves that we are killing it. By pounding your chest, you are sending a signal to your subconsciousness that you are going to beat this, and that will help it find ways to do so.

Yes, whatever is happening may be bad, but if you are still breathing, then it hasn’t taken you out, and you can look it in the eye and pound your chest as a sign of strength that you were not taken out by it and you WILL overcome it. This may seem silly, but there is a lot of meaning in the action. It will help you remind yourself that you are big, bad, and should be considered a force to be reckoned with in this life. It will boost your confidence, increase your motivation, get you pumped to fight your adversity, and help you move on to all the other tips for overcoming adversity.

If you don’t like the idea of pounding your chest, then pick something else that represents strength to you. A movement, a song, a dance, a pump of the fist, or something that allows you to tell yourself that you are strong and able to move forward with that strength, and say ‘bring it on!’

4. Develop A Good Work Ethic

Whatever has come your way, you are going to have to put some effort into overcoming it. Sometimes it’s a little effort, but sometimes it is a lot of effort. You should always be focused on working hard and not backing down from what you have to do in order to move past the struggle.

How do you develop a good work ethic? You remind yourself of what work accomplishes. If you are working to overcome something or to produce something in your life, then work produces a result that benefits you in some way. If you keep your eye on the prize, and remind yourself that you have to work to get it, then you will have a mindset that values work instead of dreads it.

5. Look To Tomorrow And Beyond

Think back on something that felt horrible a few years ago. Do you still feel intense about it? I would guess not. That’s because our emotions die down as we move on and get busy living life. We have other things to focus on and we have to keep moving towards the life we want.

The point is that things get better with time, which is why you need to look to tomorrow when you are facing adversity. It will remind you that things can change and get better. It will give you a sense of hope and motivation when you imagine a better day a week or a month from now after this has all passed.

6. Be Grateful For It

“There is no education like adversity.” – Benjamin Disraeli

I know this may sound strange to some people, but hear me out. Every adversity that you face in your life is going to help you grow or learn a lesson. Without adversities, you would never live a better life. Granted, if you were on an island faced with no problems, life doesn’t require much out of you, but if you are living in the real world, where adversity teaches us who we are and what we are made of, then you only benefit from it. It helps you grow stronger and go after the things you want in life, and that is something to be grateful for.

So, take some time to write down a few things that you can be grateful for. If you look, you will find at least one thing. Write it down, take it all in, and let it fill you up with a little hope and insight.

7. Look Outside Yourself

Don’t focus on the problems that the adversity is causing for you. You can acknowledge it for a while, because that will help you figure out what is wrong and what you need to do to overcome it, but don’t sit around thinking about it all day. If you do, then it will beat you down into a pit of despair and you will not be able to do anything to overcome it.

Put your focus on other things. You can focus on other areas of your life. You can focus on helping other people out as you work through your own issues. You can focus on what you need to do to overcome it. But, never, ever dwell on it for too long.

8. Stay in Tune With Your Instinct

If you stay in your head for too long, you will overthink your next move, but if you go with the flow, and stay in tune with your instinct, then you will know what your next move is when it comes.

Your instinct will help you turn your adversities into opportunities, because you instinctively are fighting for a way to overcome what is happening to you. We naturally want to be at peace and feel good, so, in the background, we are always keeping our internal eye open for what will help us do that. Therefore, if you pay attention to it, and don’t try to force it, you will find your next move to overcome adversity.

9. Get On The Right Path

No matter where the adversity is happening in your life, you need to make sure that you are on the right path. Are you following your dreams? Are you being honest with yourself? Are you working towards the life that you want? If not, then you need to get on the right path in order to stay motivated to overcome adversity.

If something bad happens, and you feel like you are wasting your days away, then you will not put too much effort into making things better. The voice in your head will say, ‘Why bother? Life sucks anyway!’

The right path will give meaning to your life. It will give you a reason to keep going in tough times. So, look for it! It’s important!

It’s also important to say that the wrong path may be leading you to all the adversity that you are feeling. The way you approach your life and your relationships may be playing a big part in things going badly, and you need to be open to change because of this. You may need to admit that the path you are on, even if you thought it was right at one time, may not be so great anymore for you.

For instance, J.K. Rowling took her adversity and decided to do something about it. Living on government assistance and feeling beat down in life, she decided to change things up and go after her passion. She wrote the first Harry Potter book and she has never had to face being on government assistance and feeling helpless again. Even if, for some crazy reason, she goes broke, she still has the knowledge that she can turn things around in a big way, and the blueprint to do it.

Staying open and willing to change is important for overcoming adversity. Being able to move left when moving straight is a bad idea can make all the difference in the world.

10. Get Help

There are going to be a lot of things that you can overcome by yourself, but seeking help from others will help you get unstuck from limiting beliefs or narrow views that may be holding you back. Whom you seek help from, all depends on the situation.

I know one man who owns a manufacturing company and employees a life coach to come in once a week to help him through adversities that he’s facing, both in his business and in his personal life! Life coaches can help you make positive changes in your life and keep you focused on the right path. They have the knowledge and tools to help you get through tough times.

But, a life coach isn’t always necessary. Talking to people who have been where you are and overcame it can help. And talking to people with a lot of life experience can help. Therefore, sometimes just a stroll to your park and a seat beside the right person may be the experience you need to shift your mindset or find a solution.

11. Say The Right Things

Yes, I mean positive affirmations! If adversity is in your life, then you will be inclined to say some pretty negative things. Those negative words will keep you stuck focusing on what is wrong with the situation rather than what you can do to overcome the situation. When you are able to affirm to yourself that you are going to be alright and that this adversity will pass, then you will be more likely to do all of the above and more to overcome it. What kind of positive affirmations can you use?

– This too shall pass
– I always come out a stronger person after a struggle
– I am capable of finding a way out of this

Or, use one of your own. The more you tell yourself positive things, the more you will believe it! So make your positive affirmations resonate with you and use them often.
