We all have stuff to be grateful for each day. But, when we get caught up in a negative day – or year, things can seem pretty bleak. Because being grateful is a powerful way to improve your life for the better, it’s important to be able to find the light in the tunnel and focus on it. When you do, things start to feel better and life starts to feel easier and more rewarding. Following are 14 things to be grateful for today that most people will resonate with.
1. All The Negative People In Your Day
Be grateful for all the negative people you come across today because they can teach you about yourself and life. And they can teach you a lot! They can teach you who you don’t want to be, how you want to come across to other people, and more about how and why you react the way you do.
For instance, today I had to deal with a very negative clerk at a doctor’s office. She is always grumpy, but she was especially rude today. Of course, it’s hard not to get upset when someone is rude to you, but as I quickly processed my emotions, I realized something – I was grateful for her! It gave me a chance to practice how I react to other people and it helped me see how much better I have become at processing my emotions, moving forward, and letting go of the negativity quickly.
2. Waking Up
You are reading this, so congratulations! You woke up today! I have heard a range of numbers, but I’ll take the number from Wikipedia and say that about 150,000 people die each day across the world. Some during the day and some in their sleep, and while many of them are from age-related causes, many are from other things.
So, you woke up today. Be grateful that you have another shot at making the most of your morning and hearing the birds, feeling the wind, and seeing the sky. It’s something you won’t have the pleasure of being grateful for one day.
3. You Don’t Have To Wait To Be Happy
Abraham and Hicks once said, “Most people don’t allow the happy moments because they are so busy trying to get a happy life.” However, a happy life consists of happy moments! It’s not just one random moment in the future somewhere when you get enough money, have lost enough weight, or have reached some other goal that you set out for yourself.
Being happy means you live each moment in the best way you can. Therefore, you don’t have to wait happy because today is offering you a ton of moments to take advantage of. Be grateful for that and take every chance you have to feel good, laugh, and celebrate!
4. You Have The Chance To Make A Difference
Today is a day that you can make someone else’s life better. You have the ability to be kind, give something, or do something nice for someone, which is a powerful way to make them happier and influence the energy of everyone that they come into contact with too. Even if you are on your computer at home, you can say something nice or like something or just post something that you think will make a difference. And, you are not just limited to one chance! The day offers many opportunities to do something good for others. Be grateful that you have that kind of power to influence other people simply by how you choose to act or react.
5. Your Awareness Is Open
The fact that you are reading this article means that your awareness is open. You are looking for things to be grateful for because you know that you are not feeling up to par today for whatever reason. That awareness is a gift that not everyone uses. Many people get stuck in a fantasy world where they think they can’t work themselves out of negative thoughts and states, and gratitude is something that they never even consider.
Therefore, you should be grateful that you have the awareness to seek out ways to feel happier. You understand that it can be done which means that you are on a path to living a happier life, no matter where you are on that path right now.
6. You Can Read
Are you reading this? Be grateful that you can read! According to Statistic Brain, 775 million people in the world can’t read. They can’t soak in information from a book. They can’t read other people’s stories. And, they can’t write, which I think would be very hard. They can’t write in a daily journal, a gratitude journal, or even a love note to someone they love.
You mastered the art of reading, and you are doing it right now. Take a moment to really consider how awesome that is. You can understand anything you come across just by deciphering the letters and making sense of them in your head.
7. You Were Given A Chance To Live
It is a miracle that you – the ‘you’ that you know – is here right now. Studies show that every sperm cell in a man is genetically different, and since there are 200-600 million sperm trying to fertilize an egg, the one sperm that made it was the one that created you. I guess you could say that the ‘you’ who looks back at you in the mirror really beat the odds when it comes to experiencing life.
If you are someone who wishes that you hadn’t been born, then please take the time to really remember that you were chosen because the sperm that made you was strong and capable enough to beat out the rest of his friends. You are made from something strong, and you have the ability to be someone strong as well.
8. You Have Freedom
I can’t pretend to know what not having freedom is like, but I do know that those of us who have freedom to do what we want, be what we want, and say what we want should be very grateful that we can. Even if you only have partial freedom, it is still better than having no freedom at all.
Moreover, having freedom to be yourself in your relationships and community is a blessing. You don’t have to pretend to be someone who you are not. You don’t have to do things solely for other people and not pay attention to your likes, dislikes, and interests. You get to choose what you do with your day! (Hint: Choose to be happy and have fun!)
And if you are a woman, this is especially true. An article was just published about what women can’t do is Saudi Arabia yet, and while this is not the only country where limitations apply, it is definitely worth remembering that women there can’t drive, and according to the article, they can’t even leave their house without a male guardian. Take the time to think about history and other countries when you whine about not being able to do something, especially because you don’t have the time, energy, or money, and then remember how grateful you should be that you still have the option to do it.
9. You Have A Roof Over Your Head
If you have a roof over your head, this is one of those things to be grateful for each day. I used to have to drive past homeless people on my way to work, and it was hard to see during all the months, but especially the colder months. Having protection from the weather, and having heat in a home, is something we all take for granted for on a day-to-day basis, but I can guarantee you that a homeless person would be extremely grateful for it – and we should too.
While there is no real number on how many people are homeless at one time, the stats from the National Coalition for the Homeless say that about 3.5 million people will experiencing homeless in a year in the United States, and you can likely carry this number into many other countries. Moreover, many people have to be turned away in need of shelter due to overcapacity, which means they simply don’t have a choice but to brave the elements.
10. All The Good News Of The Day
I know that we can get overloaded with bad news, which makes it hard to find things to be grateful for. But, there is a lot of good news too, and it’s happening today! You just have to know where to look. Paying attention to the good things in life give you more ideas on what you can be grateful for daily.
Therefore, follow the positive people on social media. Pay attention to the positive bloggers and vloggers, not the negative ones. And check out some good news on the Good News Network at http://www.goodnewsnetwork.org. You will be amazed at how much good news there really is out there, and it will give you plenty more things to be grateful for today.
One thing I am constantly grateful for is time. I wake up and think, “Yes! I have the whole day ahead of me!” Many people choose to view time in a negative light – as if they don’t have enough time to do what they want. But, for me, time actually makes me giddy, not upset or pressured or any other negative emotion. I think that if you love life, you are grateful for time and every moment that you get to live it, so if you love the fact that you are alive and get to do things with your day, be grateful for all the moments of your day.
If you fail today, then celebrate! It means that you have learned something and you can move forward doing things that have a greater chance of getting you what you want.
For instance, I was talking about the negative clerk at the doctor’s office earlier in this article. Well, it turns out that I thought I could just walk in and make an appointment, but I couldn’t. I hadn’t been there in months, but it is a walk-in clinic so I never thought I would be turned away. I had to walk to the doctor’s office this morning, and the walk took about 40 minutes each way, so when I was told that they didn’t take walk-ins during the week anymore, and I needed to book an appointment for tomorrow, I initially felt like I had failed. I felt like my intention for the morning was unsuccessful and that shook me up a bit. But, I quickly realized that I had just learned something – I needed to start calling ahead if I wanted to walk somewhere for something important! In the future, I will never have to walk there and get turned away again.
The chances are that you may fail at something today. If you do, take the lesson, develop a plan to not have it happen again, and be grateful for the fact that you have now learned another lesson to help you have more success in life.
13. The Ability To Change The Course Of Your Life
Today you could make a decision that changes the course of your life. You may decide to buy a lottery ticket that wins you millions. You may decide to adopt a new habit or goal into your life that is going to bring you big rewards in the future. You may decide to learn something new that shifts your whole perception on life and creates more happiness and success.
There are a ton of different things you could do today that could impact your entire life in a big way, and that’s definitely something you should be grateful for. Each day offers new possibilities for your present and your future. Keep your eyes open and make the most out of them!
14. Your Negative Emotions
When it comes to things to be grateful for, negative emotions is not something that many people list off, but the truth is you should be grateful! If you didn’t have negative emotions, then there would be something seriously wrong with you.
Trying to work towards only having positive thoughts can be so frustrating. It’s impossible unless you have no compassion for yourself and other people around you, or if you are void of fear. Negativity occurs when we feel frustrated, hurt, fearful, or angry.
Don’t be ashamed of your negative emotions. Use them to understand yourself and the people around you better, and be thankful that you have a built-in navigator to help you understand when things are not working right in your life and changes need to be made.
