We all have the potential to make a difference. We all have a gift inside of us that will help create a better world. Some people just don’t realize how much potential they have. But, when they do, watch out! They learn how to make a difference in the world in a big way.
If you want to make a bigger difference, you can start today. Following are 22 examples of how to make a difference in the world that everyone – including you, can put into action.
1. Create A Conversation
A lot of people just aren’t aware of what is wrong in this world and how they can impact it. When you start to talk about the issues and listen to other people, you start to spread awareness around issues and brainstorm how to tackle those issues. You can do this on social media, with your friends, or even with strangers.
I talk a lot about body positivity, but that’s because there is a big conversation in the world right now about it. The conversation is making a difference in many ways. It’s helping people feel better about themselves, it’s lowering the amount of bullying that is happening, and it’s connecting people together in a support system that stands up for each other when needed. The conversation is why everything started shifting and creating happier people.
2. Don’t Think In Terms of Money
When it comes to how to make a difference in the world, a lot of people’s minds go straight to money. Money is good, and can make a powerful difference, but there are so many other things you can do that also make a powerful difference. Like everything in this article!
3. Be Your Best Self
The best you will be capable of doing your best. Even if you think you should be doing better, living up to your current potential is all you can do right now. This means embracing who you are, and acknowledging what you can add to the world and then doing it. You may be waiting to make a difference until you are smarter, have more money, or change in appearance, but that’s not embracing your potential right now. There is so much you can do with what you have, so use the potential you have today to its max capacity.
4. Don’t Let Opinion Slow You Down
Too many people hold back from making a difference because they feel they will be judged. I know one woman who feels that other people will think she’s volunteering to make herself look better in other people’s eyes, and that belief affects her from doing what she really wants to do. The truth is that if other people are judging her as someone who does good in the world to look better, they have a very low opinion of other people and they wouldn’t like her no matter what she did.
I know another woman who doesn’t want to donate to the food bank unless she has a full bag to donate. She feels that donating a couple cans of food will make her look cheap and selfish. But, two cans is better than nothing, and if other people can’t see that, then too bad for them.
You can’t control how other people will view you, but you can control what you do. If you want to make a difference, do what you can without worrying about what others think.
5. Lead By Example
Leading by example is important for two reasons. First, it helps adults get those ‘aha moments’ that inspire them to do something better with themselves and their impact. Second, it helps set kids on the right path in life. Kids are quick to adopt what they see, and if they see you doing good things in this world, then they will develop an attitude that will help them contribute now and into the future. Since kids will determine the future of the world, this is a pretty powerful thing to do!
6. Tackle What You Can Tackle
Thanks to media, we hear about horrible things happening so far away from us that we feel like we can’t make an impact. And we forget to focus on what we can do.
Moreover, we hear about things that are so big we think our measly contribution can’t help. But everything helps to make a difference in the world.
It’s important to remember that there are plenty of things you can do close to home. Those things have an impact on people’s lives, and that has an impact on the world. So, when you feel overwhelmed about big things that are happening far away, look around you as see if you can make a big difference close to home.
And stop comparing yourself to others. When you compare, you may stop yourself from doing something important. Some people may be able to donate 1 million dollars. Some people may be able to donate a month’s worth of time. You may not be able to do something like that, but it doesn’t make your contribution any less important.
7. Adopt A Positive Mindset
A positive mindset is essential for making a difference in the world. When you are negative, you add to the world in a negative way. But, when you are positive, you develop a sense of optimism that helps you keep going, even when things are stressful or don’t seem to be working out in your favor. You will also bounce back quicker when you come across obstacles and failures, which will give you less downtime and more time to make a difference.
8. Share What You Know
Teachers are people who make this world a better place. They help others grow and they impact other people’s lives in a positive way. That, of course, can have a domino effect of benefit for this world. Take what you have learned and know for sure and share it with other people. Start a blog, teach a course, or offer general support to whoever needs it, and make a difference in a big way.
9. Don’t Give Up
Sometimes it will feel like you are not really making an impact, but you can’t give up. There are likely many things that are happening from your efforts behind the scenes, and if you give up on doing good in this world, then you may never know what kind of impact you could have really had. Stay patient and live in the moment, and don’t worry about what will or will not happen from your efforts.
10. Improve Your Relationships
Your relationships are important to your happiness, which impacts your ability to make a difference in this world. Moreover, if you are in relationships where positivity is always present, you are adding positivity into this world. Alternatively, if you are in relationships where negativity is always present, you are adding negativity into this world. In other words, positive relationships will help you make a difference in more ways than one, so make nurturing your relationships a priority in life.
11. Maintain Your Health
You can’t make a difference if you have no energy to contribute. The healthier you feel, the more you can give out to the world. This includes your physical and mental health. And, the longer you are around, the more time you have to make a difference. If you feel as though you are suffering in any way that is holding you back, find out what you can do and take action on your health.
12. Watch And Learn
Watch other people making a difference and you will gain insight into how you can help too. A friend of mine recently volunteered with an organization that provided aid to people in physical need, and she got to see behind the scenes and learn what happens from beginning to end. It inspired her with other ways she can make a difference and it will probably impact her for a long time to come.
13. Spread Good News
Stop spreading the bad and start spreading the good! We are bombarded with negative news every which way we turn. Could you imagine if you were to hear as much good news as you do bad? How would you feel? How you would react? How would it influence how you act in the world? The more you spread good news, the more you will help people focus on the good, which is a huge way to make a difference in the world.
14. Turn Bad Things Into Something Positive
If you can, turn bad things into something positive. Instead of dwelling on how horrible it is, find a way to make it help other people or inspire other people.
For example, recently a man named Sean O’Brien was made fun of for dancing. He is an obese man, and some kids laughed at him and took his picture in an attempt to make him feel bad and shame him on social media. It backfired. Instead, someone reached out to find him and create a whole dancing event for him in Los Angeles. It brought in over 1,000 attendees, including Monica Lewinsky, DJ Moby, and a community of people working towards a more positive world. What could have been a focal point for hate became a focal point for love.
15. Random Acts Of Kindness
If it all feels too overwhelming, then do one simple act of kindness whenever you can. One act of kindness has the potential to spread to millions of people in as fast as a day thanks to travel, social media, and connections all over the world. It doesn’t have to be something big to make a difference to someone’s day, it just has to be something that makes them feel important, supported, or happier. When you see an opportunity, take it!
16. Make The People Closest To You Feel Good
You may not be able to impact strangers today, but you can always impact the people that are closest to you. Phone your friend and tell them how valued they are, let someone close to you know they made a difference, or do something to make a difference in someone you love’s life. For example, teach your mom something she doesn’t know that will make her happy or send your friend a gift through delivery that you know they will love.
17. Don’t Ignore What Is In Front Of You
Life will always present you with a chance to make a difference in the world. Every time you buy food, you will be confronted with a way to donate money to a charity or food to a food bank. If you don’t have a lot to give, you can still choose to do something small because it still has an impact.
Moreover, that person asking for money on the side of the street should not be ignored if you actually have money to give. You will feel better about yourself when you acknowledge what is happening around you and do what you can.
18. Focus On Your Purpose
You are here with a unique purpose, and if you focus on it, then you are guaranteeing that you will make a difference to the world in some way. Whether your purpose is to be a loving mother or a successful business owner, you will find abundance if you focus on it, and that will allow you to give and influence in a big way.
19. Focus On Giving
Give when you can. If you can spare a few dollars, give. If you can spare some time and energy, then give that. Giving doesn’t just help other people feel better about themselves and impact how they behave in the world, it also affects you and how you behave in the world. When you know you have something to give and don’t, you will put yourself into a lower energy state of guilt or shame and that’s not going to benefit anyone in this world.
20. Be Environmentally Friendly
We all live on Earth, so we need to take care of it if we want to survive as a species. You can make a difference by doing whatever you can whenever you can. Compost, recycle, and don’t do things that purposely hurt the Earth. Think before you act and do what you can to help sustain what we have.
21. Do What Feels Right
Listening to your gut is something everyone should know about how to make a difference in this world. If it feels wrong, don’t do it. That’s a sign that you are not doing something positive for this world. If it feels right, then do it. That’s a sign that you are doing something positive for this world. Your gut knows what will benefit your life and the lives of other, so let it guide you in your decisions.
22. Make Your Time Count
Use your time wisely. While it can feel good to lay around and watch TV, it doesn’t contribute to this world in a positive way. Whenever you can, take the time to do meaningful things for yourself, your relationships, and everyone around you.
